Moondogs were formed in 1991 in Sersale, a small town in the heart of Calabria, Italy, by founder Antonello Sacco. From the very beginning, the band followed a restless and visceral path, marked by several line-up changes and a constant search for their own sound. In 1995 the formation finally stabilized and the first demo, No fuckin’ mask, was released: a raw and uncompromising work rooted in heavy-thrash metal, which soon caught the attention of the specialized press.
Encouraged by the positive feedback, the Moondogs intensified their live activity and continued to refine their identity. In 1997 they released Uncontrolled, a more mature demo in which social and political themes took center stage. The work includes Killing for the revolution, a song destined to become one of the band’s trademarks, along with a trilogy inspired by the story of an Irish revolutionary belonging to the IRA. Uncontrolled was widely praised by both national magazines and the European underground scene, further strengthening the band’s reputation.
In 1998 the Moondogs appeared on the compilation Into the Underground Vol. II with the previously unreleased track Revenge for tomorrow, confirming their artistic credibility. One year later they released Inside…, arguably the most introspective chapter of their discography: a complex and articulated concept album where thrash metal blends with progressive elements, creating a musical journey inspired by real dream experiences and the deeper meaning of dreams themselves.
Despite strong live performances and positive responses, from 2000 onwards the band significantly slowed down its activity. Moondogs never officiall disbanded, but entered a long period of dormancy, limiting their appearances also due to logistical reasons. In 2003 the stable entry of drummer Giuseppe Schipani marked a point of continuity within the band.
After years of silence, in February 2020 the Moondogs returned to the studio with the single Hope, symbolizing a renewed creative drive. Their definitive comeback came on December 28, 2023, when—after nearly fifteen years away from the stage—the band released the album …Outside during a special launch party.
…Outside is a mature and multifaceted work in which the band’s influences emerge powerfully: from the fast, almost speed-metal rhythms of Away, to the flamenco-tinged atmospheres of Little Servant, and the dark, gothic progression of Like Tears in the Rain Part II. The lyrics explore deep and universal themes: love and respect for Native Americans and their fate (The Mountains Watch), the irrepressible drive for individual freedom (I’m Free), spiritual inquiry inspired by the writings of Carlos Castaneda (Like Tears…), and the need to keep believing in hope, despite everything (Hope).
Recorded at Centogradincantina Recording Studio in Sersale, …Outside was born from a long-standing friendship and collaboration, allowing the band to fully self-produce the album—from recording to artwork design. The album is available on major digital platforms, in CD format, and will soon be released on limited-edition gatefold vinyl.
